The ground-breaking 2018 Farm Bill made an important distinction between cannabis and hemp. According to this bill, hemp is defined as cannabis with 0.3% or less delta 9 THC and makes all hemp and hemp-derived products (including delta 8 THC) legal.

However, states still retain the power to make different laws and regulations regarding these products.

Nevada is a cannabis-friendly state and allows delta 9 THC use regardless of its origin or concentration. However, Nevada banned delta 8 THC.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DELTA 8 THC & DELTA 9 THC?

Delta 8 THC is a phytocannabinoid found in minimal concentrations in cannabis — less than 1%. This is because delta 8 is merely a by-product of delta 9 THC chemical degradation.

Delta 9, contrarily, is found in concentrations up to 30%. When exposed to environmental factors, such as UV light and heat, it naturally degrades into delta 8 THC.

Another important difference is potency. Delta 8 has roughly half the strength of delta 9 when it comes to cognitive effects. Regarding health benefits, you basically get the same out of both.

Choosing between the two obviously starts with which (if any) are legal in your state; aside from that, how do you pick one over the other if they have such similar effects and benefits?

First, you need twice the amount of delta 8 to get the same high as you would with delta 9 — however,  delta 8 leads to fewer side effects, like anxiety, and is better at increasing your appetite.

Moreover, since you need a greater amount to get the same effect, you’re less likely to use too much delta 8 by accident and get undesired side effects. However, delta 8 is considerably more expensive than delta 9.

Finally, you develop tolerance to delta 8 faster, but you can also regain it quicker.

IS DELTA 8 THC SAFE?

As previously mentioned, you need twice the delta 8 THC to get the same psychotropic effects as delta 9, which makes it much safer.

Additionally, delta 9 comes with more severe side effects than delta 8, including paranoia and anxiety, making delta 8 a safer alternative.
